“One necessarily wants to look for a culprit. “One necessarily wants to look for a culprit. In reality, the proponents of the production of synthetic meat, which they say would reduce the environmental impact caused by livestock farms, are only interested in their business. Behind this phenomenon which is unfortunately collecting huge capital worldwide, there is exclusively an economic interest".
For Luca Panichi, president of ANABIC (National Association of Italian Meat Cattle Breeders), the disinformation of a slice of consumers fuels erroneous and unfounded beliefs that can be dismantled with certain and incontrovertible data such as those reported by Ispra (Higher Institute for the Protection and environmental research), which in a study quantifies the value of greenhouse gas emissions from cattle farms at 3%.
"Without hesitation - Panichi explains - we joined the mobilization promoted a few weeks ago by Coldiretti against synthetic food by signing the relevant document to stop this dangerous drift that jeopardizes the future of our farms and the entire made in Italy agri-food chain".
ANABIC has over 5,000 associated beef cattle farms where cattle belonging to the Chianina, Marchigiana, Maremmana, Podolica and Romagnola breeds are bred for an overall consistency of around 160,000 heads distributed in 18 different regions from the North to the South of the country: 70% of farms is extensive, therefore totally grazing.
“There is no doubt that animals, in this case cattle in particular, produce emissions – underlines Stefano Pignani, director of ANABIC – and above all methane. But it should also be specified that, unlike CO2, its life cycle in the atmosphere does not exceed twenty years, reaching zero while carbon dioxide, mainly produced by transport, industry and minimally by animals, is consumed even in a thousand years resulting in an almost continuous accumulation. This is the scientific information that unfortunately is often omitted, preferring to demonize farms as the cause of all the ills in the world.
Let's not forget that the so-called synthetic meat is covered by a patent, it is produced on an industrial level and this can only favor a greater production of CO2. It is therefore not correct to present the problem in an artificial way without objectivity and forgetting, often instrumentally, the great benefits that farms such as those of our associates guarantee for the environment"
“In fact – President Panichi points out – the breeds we represent live in dimensions of total naturalness, constitute a social value that has its roots in very distant times and ensure the territory that role of supervision and protection which in times of great climate change it can counteract its effects: just think of the consequences of drought if those areas were totally abandoned. It is very easy to forget these aspects, above all because they are benefits that we all enjoy, they are somehow taken for granted and also for this reason their importance is not perceived too often".
In its role of protecting the livestock production of the native Italian cattle breeds it represents, ANABIC does not only refer to the link with the territory, to the sustainability of the associated companies, to the defense of an important cultural heritage. “We have always been involved in a process of genetic improvement of the breeds – specifies the director Pignani – which goes precisely in the direction of that transparency and traceability increasingly required by the attentive consumer who asks for clear information. The activity of our Genetic Center is a demonstration of this, as is the conservation in our DNA Bank of as many as 600,000 samples which represent a bulwark for meat quality controls, as well as constituting an important obstacle to potential fraud that could occur . The distinctiveness guaranteed by cattle herds of breeds as important as those we represent - concludes Stefano Pignani - is a unicum that synthetic meat cannot offer because its production is only the result of a homologation process. And homogenization, in food, can only generate uncertainty. Food security, on the other hand, comes precisely from the diversification of production. What the cattle of the breeds represented by ANABIC guarantee”.
