Argentina: meat exports to North America worth USD 113 mln

New government boosts business, ordering distribution of over 19 mln tonnes in the US

17, Jan 2024

In Argentina, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation reported that, with Resolution n° 10/2024, the distribution of 19,388,384 tons of beef was ordered, with a preferential tariff, assigned by the United States Department of Agriculture.

These - the ministry reports - are fresh, refrigerated and frozen cuts of boned beef, similar to those that make up the so-called "Hilton quota", corresponding to the countries of the European Union, as it is a "highly segmented and quality market". It should be remembered that, as part of the process of harmonization of tariff quota management systems decided together with the other Mercosur partner countries, the criteria for the allocation of beef quotas to Europe and the United States are based on the results applicants' export history, based on their performance over the past three years, as measured by the "free on board" value of their sales.

As of 2023, the North American market represented a global business of $113 million for Argentina, with average prices of $7,000 for chilled cuts and $5,000 for frozen cuts, per ton exported. Argentina returned to the American meat market in 2018 and, as of 2020, the tariff quota has been fully used.
