The Associazione Regionale Allevatori dell'Emilia Romagna (ARAER) intends to respond to the attacks on the livestock sector with a series of initiatives that favour the professional improvement of its members, while providing consumers with guarantees on quality and production processes
“Araer and the Breeders System respond to the major Stakeholders who are systematically attacking our sector globally by rejecting the unfounded accusations made against us, but above all by focusing on our tangible commitment both in compliance with the regulations in force , that of the wishes of the consumer, who is increasingly attentive to the quality of the food he brings to his table”.
Thus Maurizio Garlappi, president of the Regional Breeders Association of Emilia Romagna, on the sidelines of the first technical update meeting on the management of cattle farms organized as part of a series of initiatives which in the coming weeks will involve all the provinces and breeders of the Emilia Romagna.
The meeting was held on 3 February at the headquarters of the Italian Agricultural Consortia in San Giorgio di Piano (BO) and was aimed at farmers in the provinces of Bologna and Ferrara. Thursday 9 February will be the turn of the farmers of the province of Parma who will gather at the Sala della Cultura in Neviano degli Arduini, the historic center of the area, where the Municipality has granted its sponsorship to the initiative.
“All the provinces of the region will be involved and from time to time in each one a meeting will be organized on the management of farms in terms of milk and stable health, to which the farmers who own livestock farms in the area will be invited – explains the director of ARAER, Claudio Bovo – This is an obligatory path not only for the professional improvement of breeders, but also for examining the numerous aspects which, starting with the recent regulations and the entry into force of the new CAP, place the zootechnical sector at the center of a great evolutionary process”.
The main topics of the meetings are the selective drying off of dairy cows, the advantages offered by the Si@lleva management software, provided free of charge to all ARAER members, the in-depth analysis of the new services offered by ARAER starting with the activity of its analysis located at the provincial headquarters of Reggio Emilia, equipped with the most technologically innovative tools for diagnostics, microbiology and molecular biology, where the staff annually performs something like 1.6 million analyzes on milk samples produced not only in Emilian farms -Romagna but also from Umbria, Tuscany and Abruzzo and part of Lazio.
“One year after the entry into force of the mandatory selective dry-off procedure within dairy herds - explained Veterinarian Angela Toti - the data collected so far confirms that this new way of managing the problem of mastitis in cattle it represents a great opportunity both in terms of reducing the use of antibiotics and in terms of livestock health. The transition from herd management to management of each individual subject has undoubtedly marked a break with the past because from a preventive action, as happened before, we have moved on to a therapeutic action where the need arises. This new approach then has a further advantage which translates into greater appeal for the consumer, who is now very attentive to the problems associated with the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance".
"Despite the difficulties imposed by the pandemic and the Ukrainian conflict - underlined the director Claudio Bovo - in the last two years we wanted to invest in technology by equipping our laboratory with the most innovative diagnostic tools, which was joined by a staff training course so that the increased skills would allow him to make the most of all the potential offered by technology. Farmers can thus have reliable and incontrovertible data which, elaborated on the basis of each individual production reality, represent a value to be spent in terms of quality of the milk produced, traceability, credibility, company profitability".
"In the pipeline we also have the creation of various training sessions - the president Maurizio Garlappi intervened - starting with courses on artificial insemination organized in collaboration with Dinamica (Consortium company for professional training specialized in the agri-food sector, ed), on milking techniques as well as a series of meetings that we are building on animal welfare in relation to the provisions of the new CAP, which entered into force on 1 January last. The zootechnical world and the Farmers System in particular have always been able to demonstrate an extraordinary ability to face the great difficulties and the most insidious challenges and the months of the pandemic, during which our work has never stopped, have proved it. Today we have before us no less demanding tests and it is for this reason that we believe it is essential to place ourselves towards the consumer as an attentive and
