Update done with a Ministerial Note on 26 July 2024. Main topic ‘no tail cut’
The deadline for sending a completion of the Implementation Plan concerning Animal Welfare (Legislative Decree 122/2011 and Legislative Decree 146/2001) to the EU is 31 December 2024. The Ministry's report highlights the current status: pig farms that do not cut their tails represent 14 % of the national pig production (farms ≥ 300 heads), while those that have introduced uncut tail groups represent 55 %, for a total of about 70 % of farms that no longer routinely cut the tails of all animals. Remaining in unknown status, about the practice of tail docking, are 13 % of the farms. Difficulties were, however, caused by the failure of suppliers from other EU countries to send piglets with uncut tails, and a comprehensive and conclusive statement from the European Commission is still awaited.
