Coast Guard and GdF intercept material found to be largely unfit for consumption
>>> The edible part of the goods was donated to the Diocesan Caritas
A combined blitz by the Fiamme Gialle and the Coast Guard resulted in the massive seizure of 108 tons of seafood. It happened near Cagliari, where the investigation brought to a standstill a processing plant for raw food materials, mostly from non-European countries.
Part of the seized product was deemed unfit for consumption, and was therefore destroyed, after being examined by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the ASL. A small percentage of the food, however, was deemed edible and donated to the Diocesan Caritas of Cagliari, with the thanks of the Archbishop Monsignor Giuseppe Baturi.
The seized fish and seafood had been found to have "violations ranging from the lack of traceability of the fish product, to irregular detention according to the prescribed health standards, as well as the incorrect application of self-control procedures (HACCP)", we learn from sources in the Guardia di Finanza and the Coast Guard.
