Aquaculture still marginal in the old continent (but not in the rest of the world)
According to Eurostat, the production of aquatic animals in the EU stood at 4.2 million tonnes in 2022, with landings from fisheries contributing about 3.1 million tonnes. At the same time, aquaculture reached 1.1 million tonnes. This means that fisheries catches remain the main source of aquatic animals in the EU, accounting for 74% of total production.
In value terms, fishery catches landed in the EU reached about EUR 6.2 billion, while aquaculture production amounted to EUR 4.9 billion. The average price for fishery products was therefore EUR 1.9 per kg and EUR 4.5 per kg for aquaculture animals.
The situation in the EU is different from the global trend, where a report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) recently stated that in 2022 and for the first time in history, ‘aquaculture has overtaken capture fisheries as the leading producer of aquatic animals’.
