WEST Winter Extreme South Tyrol BBQ Contest
Every year, an official KCBS barbecue competition is organised in Riva di Tures, South Tyrol, at an altitude of 1,540 metres in the snow-covered mountains. The location is at the Cross-Country Ski Centre in the Ahrntal Valley, at the foot of the Collalto (3,436 m), the highest and most imposing mountain in the Vedrette di Ries Group. In January, there are 30 to 60 minutes of sunshine at the contest area. Temperatures can drop to -20°. This year saw the second edition of the WEST Winter Extreme South Tyrol BBQ Contest, and it was really extreme: 80 cm of snow fell in 2 days and even the access roads and the Brenner Pass were closed!
With temperatures of 10 degrees below zero and almost a metre of snow, 25 international teams had to prepare four dishes on their charcoal barbecues. The teams came from all over Europe.nThe compulsory dishes were: Brisket, Pulled Pork, Chicken and Ribs.
After an exciting point count, Mano Zaal (9-time Belgian champion and European champion 2023 and 2018) scored the most points. Even with an exceptionally perfect score and 700 points, which had never happened before at Ze WEST's 10th anniversary.
BBQ chef Mano Zaal, pitmaster of BBQ+, born in Amsterdam and living in Mol (BE), is honoured and proud of his achievements during this challenging season. Mr Zaal is also a calf specialist and sales manager at Vanlommel in Belgium.
