Both slaughtering and curing (PDO) prices fall but profitability holds
The downward trend in the profitability of the Italian pig breeding sector continues. In June, the Crefis index (www.crefis.it) for the closed cycle dropped by 3.8% at a cyclical level, although it maintained a favourable variation compared to last year (+16.6%). This situation was caused by the concomitant increase in feed costs, especially for soya and maize, and the fall in quotations for heavy slaughter pigs destined for the protected circuit, which, again in June, fell by 3.7% compared to the previous month, stopping at 1.898 euro/kg; while at trend level the variation was -10%.
