Meat sounding. 'Senate decision favours consumers'

Scordamaglia (Filiera Italia): 'The misuse of the name of meat substitutes should be definitively banned'

07, Jul 2023

"Good news, first of all for consumers": this is how Luigi Scordamaglia, CEO of Filiera Italia comments on the approval in the Senate of the amendment against the improper use of meat denominations in the context of the bill against production and the distribution of synthetic foods (see EFA News article).

"Nobody wants to prevent the consumption of vegetable substitutes, but the consumer cannot be deceived by suggesting that an ultra-processed food can have the same nutritional properties as a natural food, an issue on which, among other things, the European Court of Justice has already ruled - says Scordamaglia. "A meat hamburger contains only one main ingredient, a "veggie" medallion has a long list of ingredients, many of which are anything but vegetable...".

And the managing director continues: "We hope soon for a national law that definitively prohibits this abuse of denomination and that enhances a production, that of meat, which also has a cultural and traditional value".

"Once again - concludes Scordamaglia - it is good to remember the importance of keeping alive the relationship between land and food production, against homologation and against those who believe they can erase millenary traditions by replacing them with industrial processes and laboratories, always with the objective of informing the consumer with transparency to allow them to make fully informed choices".
