With climate change, the situation is likely to worsen
Fish deaths are unfortunately only the most obvious aspect of what is happening in the Orbetello Lagoon: just think of the fate of the animals that live on the bottom of the lagoon, such as crustaceans and molluscs. Unfortunately, we must remember what we have been highlighting for years because we are faced with episodes that now occur cyclically. The last one, which hit the national news for the enormous number of dead fish, dates back to 2015, but similar episodes also occurred in the 80s and 90s.
As experts have well explained, one of the main factors in the hypertrophy episodes are the tons of nitrogen that are poured into the lagoon waters from the fertilizers used in agricultural fields and partly also from aquaculture activities.
