In the first 9 months of 2023, in contrast with the slowdown in EU sales of mass-market products, Mortadella Bologna recorded an increase in production +5.0%, sales + 4.0% and exports + 7.9%. Sliced meat also did very well + 5.8%
In the first nine months of 2023, 28.8 million kg of Mortadella Bologna PGI were produced, and more than 25 million kg were sold. Compared to the same period in 2022, production grew by 5.0% and sales by 4.0% (data provided by the control body IFCQ certifications). Sliced products in trays confirmed the ten-year trend of constant growth, registering an increase of 7.9%, confirming the end consumer’s preference for a convenient, practical and easy-to-stock format.
In Italy, large-scale retail trade is confirmed as the main sales channel with a share of 54.6%, followed by Normal Trade with 28.5% and Discount with 16.9%.
20.4% of sales are exported, mainly to EU countries, of which France and Germany are the main markets, with shares of 30% and 25%. Overall, sales in the EU increased by 9.8% compared to the first nine months of 2022. In particular, in Germany and Spain, exports of Mortadella Bologna PGI grew in double figures, registering an increase, compared to the first nine months of 2022, of 17.3% and 13.0% respectively.
