More supply on the shelf, less shopping in the trolley: 'sustainable' products do not stand up to the cut in spending. Only those without antibiotics and those sold in 'green' packaging are growing.
There are more than 36,000 products sold in supermarkets and hypermarkets that claim to be socially or environmentally responsible, respectful of animals and sustainable resource management. In one year they increased by +8.6% in turnover but lost -4.3% in volume. Of the 35 claims surveyed by GS1 Italy's Immagino Observatory, only eight went against the tide.
