“We are right on the brink of a disaster, we are on the edge of an abyss. We have been complaining for 15-20 years that uncontrolled wildlife is a huge problem, today we are reaping the benefits of not having been listened to. Swine fever is an exquisitely commercial problem, it is a problem of trade relations between Italy and the rest of the world. The presence of the plague virus on Italian soil does not put consumption at risk because it is a health problem, because it is not a health problem in any way. The problem is that this virus is transported through meat to foreign countries where the plague virus is not present. So since we had the virus in Italy, the export of pork to China, to Japan, to Asia in general and to some American countries was blocked a few days later, creating damage to exports. According to estimates made by Assica (Association of Meat and Cured Meat Industrialists), it can be valued at between 20 and 30 million euros per month. Since the plague arrived in Italy in January 2022, we have accumulated over half a billion in export damages so far”.
