27, Feb 2023

Promotion, research, protection and services to producers. These were the cornerstones on which the members’ assembly of the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO held last Saturday at the Consortium’s headquarters.

The assembly unanimously voted on the final balance sheet for 2022 and approved the programmatic plan of activities for 2023, always having as a guideline the absolute quality and exclusivity of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO. This programmatic plan, will move on four main strands, namely promotion, research, supervision and protection, with a reference also on the function of Fundraising.

Relative to the recently concluded financial year, flattering results were achieved, as Enrico Corsini, president of the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO, said in his report: «In recent years, the Protection Consortium has grown and made the supply chain stronger. Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO in 2022 has fully latched onto the momentum of the post-pandemic restart of Italian agribusiness. The year just past marked a new record for ABTM bottling, in the unique 100-ml “Giugiaro” format unique to all producers, which registered +43%. A result achieved thanks to the quality of ABTM's certified producers and the promotion and protection activities put in place by the Consortium».

«At the beginning of the new year — explained Councillor Michele Montanari in the programmatic report for 2023 — the Emilia-Romagna Region recognized the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Food District; this means having one more opportunity for the development of the supply chain and for territorial marketing. In this context, the Consortium intends to support the development of the district to address and support quality tourism in the vinegar factories and investments in the incoming sector».

«In the development of the program of activities for 2023 — he added — the Consortium has also identified scientific research as one of its objectives: it is a path that began with the conference “The Flavor of Vinegar”, which in November 2022 brought together more than 250 experts in the field and will continue for a better definition of the organoleptic characteristics of the product. In addition to this, the development of systems for traceability and sustainability, both economic and environmental, are some firm points on which the Consortium intends to insist with targeted research activities».

Collaboration between the PDO and PGI bodies also takes concrete form with the fight against Italian Sounding and imitations. The latter is an issue of great topicality and complexity that must necessarily be developed in synergy by the two Consortia, which in these have achieved important results in their task of protecting in the world the designations of Modenese Balsamic Vinegar.
