Collaboration between Ismea and Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano for stock monitoring starts

The Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano announces the start of a collaboration with Ismea for a more punctual monitoring of stocks that will make a decisive contribution, in compliance with the principles of transparency and free competition among all the operators involved, to implementing the objectives set out in the 2023-2025 Parmigiano Reggiano supply regulation plan, approved by the MIPAAF on 11 July 2022

22, Dec 2022

The creation of the Observatory on Parmigiano Reggiano stocks stems from the need to fill the gap in official statistical sources that currently exists for the hard cheese market, a problem that is particularly acute for a 'long-maturing' product such as Parmigiano Reggiano, characterised by very long lead times between the setting of production decisions and the placing on the market of the finished product and, as a consequence, by the need to have tools to regulate supply. Thanks to the collaboration between Ismea and the Consortium, work was therefore carried out on a model that was not only technically efficient, but could also provide maximum guarantees of total confidentiality of data for all operators involved.

The Observatory, the design, management, data collection and processing of which is entrusted to Ismea, will therefore serve to accurately measure the consistency of supply in order to provide the Consortium with the cognitive elements necessary to make an accurate assessment of the conditions of market balance and to set the consequent choices for the supply chain. It will also be a useful tool for the operators of the same chain, who will be able to use it to improve the analysis of their own performance and strategies. Thanks to the project, which will become operational at the beginning of 2023 with the definition of operational protocols for data collection, it will be possible to elaborate and make available at an aggregate level a snapshot of the total stocks of PDO products by production period, which is indispensable for the Plan itself and its management.
