Spain and Greece the worst affected countries: drought the first cause of decline
According to estimates by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), sheep meat production in the EU stood at 95,000 tonnes in the first three months of 2024. This is a decrease of 4200 tonnes (4%) compared to the same period in 2023, with two of the main producers, Spain and Greece, experiencing a particularly marked decline. Spanish production was impacted by ongoing droughts, as evidenced by the 11% drop in production from January to March year-on-year. Greek production fell even more (-13%), to 9,900 tonnes in the year to date.
