A successful 2022 for the Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena PDO

The new Distretto del Cibo and the new regulations “Erga Omnes” of the Consortium

29, Dec 2022

It closes with a sensational sign plus the year 2022 of the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO. Especially in terms of certified bottles, which compared to 2021 recorded a further increase of 43%, even improving on last year's already flattering +30% compared to the previous year. The numbers are given by the Protection Consortium, the only one appointed by law to supervise, protect and promote Modena's black gold since 2009. Speaking with the data, there have been no less than 145 thousand packages certified by the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena supply chain DOP, and this represents a sign of further encouragement for the sector, after the difficult years marked by the pandemic.

The Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena DOP therefore seems to be navigating in calm waters at the moment, being able to count on good stocks of product in the batteries of barrels which, due to the long aging to which the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar must undergo, represent a fundamental support to the production of future years.

"The approximately 250 local producers - comments the President of the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, Enrico Corsini - together hold around 3 million liters of aging product in their vinegar cellars. A quantitatively limited production, which together with the large investments necessary to install and manage a vinegar cellar and the length of aging make it an exclusive and highly valuable product, with a high value, not only economic - which can reach up to one thousand euros per liter – but also of value for the important baggage of history it bears”.

The year 2022 was also the year in which the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena started the procedure for the recognition of the Food District of the same name for the promotion and development of the reference product, the enhancement of the supply chain and of the culture and tradition of the area. The state of progress of the works to date is the approval of the regulation and the forwarding of the loan application to the Emilia Romagna Region. The next step will be the recognition of the District, so that the Consortium will see its skills expand and will be able to participate in national tenders for contributions for the promotion and development of the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena sector.

The Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO Food District being set up, as is already the case for the other Food Districts, will also be closely linked to the territory with a homogeneous historical identity, the result of the integration between agricultural and local activities, as well as of the production of goods or services of particular specificity, consistent with the natural and local traditions and vocations. The collaborations that the District will be able to establish with tourist and food and wine activities, and with the institutions for the promotion of the Modena area will be important.

Among the topics discussed in the shareholders' meeting held at the end of the financial year, there is also the important change in the consortium regulation which concerns the application of the so-called "Erga Omnes" rule, i.e. the contribution due by producers - both members and not - to cover the expenses related to the protection, supervision, valorisation, promotion and dissemination of the product. “The Consortium – adds Corsini – has always been attentive to containing costs so as not to overload the producers too much and this contribution goes precisely in this direction. Since ours is a protection consortium recognized by law by the Ministry, and the only one that can boast the name "Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena" in its corporate name, it has in fact the power to exercise its functions towards all the subjects included in the control system even if not associated, and to distribute the costs among all producers, members and non-members. I am pleased that the new Regulation was unanimously approved by the Shareholders during the last extraordinary meeting held on December 17, and the Board of Directors is preparing to present a more aggressive promotional program to support the positive market trend we are registering, and in which all producers should participate, both in terms of benefits and costs".

With regard to protection and above all supervisory activities, the Protection Consortium prepares a real program every year in collaboration with the Fraud Repression Office, and also makes use of a Public Security Supervisory Agent who is responsible for verifying the compliance of the products on the market to production regulations and surveillance of similar products, such as the many "balsamic condiments" that are misleading for the consumer.
