Mortadella Bologna IGP: sales and exports up

In the first 6 months of 2023, production grew 3.8% and sales increased 4.1%. Sliced meat also grew with +7.4%. Exports up 6.7% in the EU region. Especially noteworthy is the growth in the German market +13.3 percent and the Spanish market +12.4 percent

In the first six months of 2023, 18.9 million kilograms of Mortadella Bologna IGP were produced and more than 16.1 million kilograms were sold. Compared to the same period in 2022, production grew by 3.8% and sales by 4.1% (data provided by the inspection body IFCQ certifications). Sliced in trays confirmed the underlying trend of steady growth, recording a 7.4 percent increase, confirming consumers’ preference for a convenient, practical and easy-to-stock format.

In Italy, large-scale retail is confirmed as the main sales channel with a 54.9% share, followed by Normal Trade with 28.6% and Discount with 16.5%.


20.5% of sales are for export, mainly to EU countries, among the latter France and Germany being the main markets with shares of 30% and 25%. Overall, sales in the EU increased by 6.7% compared to H1 2022. In particular, in Germany and Spain, exports of Mortadella Bologna PGI grew in double digits, registering an increase, compared to the first six months of 2022, of 13.3%and 12.4%, respectively.
