A delegation from the Italian Fish Farmers’ Association visited the Linde Innovation Centre in Norway to learn more about technologies for oxygen management in fish farms
With the global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, aquaculture is playing an increasingly central role in ensuring food security and sustainability. With demand for fish protein constantly rising and traditional fisheries under pressure, the sector is called upon to make a significant leap forward in terms of productivity, sustainability, animal welfare and process control. In this context, applied research and technological innovation play a decisive role. Norway is among the countries already moving in this direction, and the figures (source: API) clearly illustrate the trend: in the land of the fjords, aquaculture production exceeds 1.5 million tonnes for a population of around 5 million (300 kg per capita), whilst in Europe it stands at 0.6 million tonnes for 448 million inhabitants (1.3 kg per capita), falling in Italy to just 0.051 million tonnes for 59 million inhabitants (0.86 kg per capita) . This gap highlights just how strategic it is to invest in innovation and the development of the supply chain to strengthen the competitiveness of the Italian system.
Against this backdrop, a mission organised by the Italian Fish Farmers’ Association (API) and Linde Gas Italia took place in June at the Linde Innovation Centre for Aquaculture and Water Treatment in Ålesund, Norway – one of the leading international technology hubs dedicated to aquaculture.
One of the main areas of research is oxygen management, a parameter that is essential for the growth and welfare of fish and a key factor in the efficiency of fish farms. Located in one of the world’s most advanced regions for fish farming, the centre serves as an open-air laboratory where technologies are tested under real operating conditions, and where Linde’s team of engineers designs bespoke systems for industry operators, accelerating the transfer of innovation on a global scale.
«Perhaps the most important aspect of this experience — emphasised API President Matteo Leonardi — was seeing how a technology partner such as Linde feels part of the supply chain and not simply an external supplier. We had the opportunity to engage with an organisation that is a global benchmark, whilst also contributing our Italian expertise. The challenge now is to pass on the knowledge and insights gathered to Italian fish farmers and the Confagricoltura network, so that they can become practical tools for strengthening the competitiveness of Italian aquaculture».
«The collaboration with API — reiterated Andrea Porrini, Executive Director of Linde Italy and North Africa, — confirms just how important it is to create opportunities for dialogue between those who develop technologies and those who work on fish farms every day. Sharing the experience gained in contexts such as Norway can contribute to the growth of Italian aquaculture».
