Interreg Italy Croatia Project for Environmental and Economic Growth in the Adriatic Sea

09, Jul 2024

"3EFishing" (in full "3E-innovation of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture: research-based and piloted Electric-engine refitting of fishing vessels to enhance Environmental and Economic Adriatic Blue Growth") is the new European project of cross-border co-operation between Italy and Croatia (Interreg Italy-Croatia) aiming at the development of new boats with electric motors: a solution to reduce emissions and improve the economic sustainability of enterprises in the fishing and aquaculture sector.
The project, coordinated in Italy by the Alma Mater Bologna University and in Croatia by the Institute of Oceanography in Split, aims, in a broader sense, to promote the transfer of knowledge and applied research results to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the sector; in this pilot phase it envisages the refitting of two fishing boats under 12 metres with hybrid engines and the use of renewable energy sources.
Supporting the project leaders will be the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture and ISMEA - Istituto di Servizi per il Mercato Agricolo Alimentare italiano. The Agency for Innovation in the Agri-food and Fishing Sector of the Marche Region 'Marche Agricoltura Pesca', the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, and Zadar County will also participate, and will have the task of involving the sector's operators, while the most important Croatian aquaculture company, CROMARIS, will be directly involved in the processes and testing phases of the innovations.
