Retail spending in May: “The recent and legitimate protests by the fishing industry – with the cooperative sector estimating that at least 28 million euros in emergency aid is needed to save the fleet from being permanently laid up – unfortunately represent only the tip of an iceberg of national proportions. The provisional allocation of 5 million euros proposed at regional level to mitigate the surge in fuel prices is a mere local stopgap in the face of a structural crisis that is spreading to ports across the entire peninsula.”
This is the view of Confsal Pesca Agroalimentare and Fesica, which are extending the state of maximum alert to all the country’s coastal regions, from Chioggia to Manfredonia, from Mazara del Vallo to San Benedetto del Tronto, denouncing a fishing fleet caught in a lethal stranglehold. On the one hand, there is the uncontrolled surge in operating costs linked to the price of diesel; on the other, a drastic decline in the biological productivity of the seas, ravaged by extreme weather events, warming waters and the abnormal proliferation of slime that is destroying fishing nets.: the pig sector is accelerating, the cattle sector is paying the price
