The new project "Sustainability of the Romagnola Clam Fishery – SPVR" has begun.

The "Romagnola Clam" is one of the Riviera's finest seafood, gastronomic, and cultural specialties, caught by 54 authorized hydraulic dredges in the Ravenna and Rimini districts. This long-standing fishing activity is carried out by companies that have successfully innovated, both technologically and economically. These companies are also attentive to environmental aspects and have collaborated with public and private research institutes on sustainability projects for over twenty years.
This is the context for the new project "Sustainability of Romagnola Clam Fishing – SPVR" - funded by the Emilia-Romagna region, with FEAMPA funds, with the M.A.R.E. cooperative of Cattolica as scientific lead.
Three actions have already been launched. First, after a preliminary discussion with COGEMO of Rimini and the National Planning Body of Management Consortia for the management and rebalancing of bivalve mollusc resources, a strict reserve area for the "Romagnola clam," Chamelea gallina, has been identified in the Rimini District, in the Torre Pedrera area. This decision was validated by the Rimini Port Authority, which recently issued a specific ordinance regarding a "total ban on collection" from May 13, 2026, until February 28, 2027. Samples will be taken in this area to monitor the evolution of benthic biocoenoses, with particular reference to the clam.
The second action concerns the design, construction, and testing of a "green hydraulic dredge" with a lower environmental impact. In short, it will be a device with a smaller mouth than the one currently in use, going from 3 meters to 2.5 meters, and slightly lighter, with a more selective grid that will allow for the catching of larger clams. All this, combined with a slower towing speed and reduced water jet power, will demonstrate the reduction in environmental impact while maintaining economic sustainability. Finally, the MOPEVO fishing area monitoring app will be updated with data on catch quantities, thus enabling faster and more effective management decisions, always with sustainability in mind.
This project therefore fosters a further step forward in the fruitful and essential relationship between fishermen and researchers, which will also allow the "Romagnola Clam" to be promoted from an ecological perspective. A zero-mile product, a distinctive feature also essential for a food tourism industry increasingly focused on environmental sustainability.
