Florence is the starting point for the revival of national mariculture
In a country that imports over 80% of the fish it consumes, the Italian aquaculture sector is seeking to redefine its role within the national agri-food system. This was the message that emerged from the study day entitled “Fish production as a strategic component of the national agri-food system”, organised by the Italian Fish Farmers’ Association (API) in collaboration with the Accademia dei Georgofili in Florence – a symbolic centre of agricultural culture – as part of the 2025–2027 National Three-Year Programme for Fisheries and Aquaculture supported by MASAF.
The initiative brought together businesses, universities, researchers and institutions to discuss a topic that intertwines food security, sustainability, productive competitiveness and dependence on foreign imports. Underlying this is a contradiction that the sector considers increasingly evident: Italy is one of the main European markets for the consumption of fish products, yet domestic production continues to remain marginal compared to domestic demand.
