The Sardinia Region is participating in the Italian Oyster Fest 2026 in La Spezia, the Italian festival dedicated to the oyster, scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24. The event will highlight the work built over the years in the oyster farming sector, now one of the most dynamic emerging sectors in the regional seafood economy.
"Sardinian oyster farming is experiencing extraordinary growth, and today Sardinia has become the leading Italian region for oyster production," emphasizes Regional Councilor for Agriculture Francesco Agus. "It is the result of collaborative efforts between businesses, institutions, and research centers that believed in the possibility of building an innovative, sustainable, and competitive supply chain. I want to highlight the fundamental role played by Sardegna Ricerche, the IMC Foundation, and the Agris Sardegna Agency, which in recent years have contributed to building a true regional system of oyster farming expertise.
Councilor Agus will participate tomorrow in the thematic conference "The Future of the Italian Oyster: Identity, Supply Chain, and Quality Recognition," promoted by Gal Fish Liguria together with the relevant regional councilors of Liguria and Veneto, the Undersecretary and the Directorate General for Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Masaf (National Association of Fisheries and Aquaculture) and the trade associations.
"This is a sector that is not stopping and continues to look ahead despite the serious damage caused to businesses in the sector this year by Cyclone Harry," Agus emphasizes, "and for this reason, we are working with the Ministry to ensure adequate compensation is provided to affected businesses. Participation in the Oyster Fest, like our participation in the Seafood Festival in Barcelona last April, is important because it allows us to showcase a Sardinia that invests in its seafood economy, the quality of its products, and research. For this reason, our offices are already working to ensure that next year, Sardinia itself hosts a major trade fair dedicated to aquaculture and the sector's development prospects."
