The FAO forecasts further growth in the coming years
With a value of 184 billion dollars, the trade in fish and fish products continues to reach record levels and now rivals that of land-based meat. Ensuring the sustainable and equitable growth of marine and inland ecosystems, however, remains a key challenge. This is according to the latest report on the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA 2026) by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).
The report, presented yesterday at the 11th ‘Our Ocean’ conference in Mombasa, Kenya, provides up-to-date statistics on fisheries and aquaculture globally. It highlights how the FAO, together with member states, communities, institutions, industry and partners, is translating its vision of Blue Transformation into measurable results.
