Rome, July 23, 2026 - A comprehensive package of measures for the fishing sector, involving national and EU resources, totaling over €70 million, in addition to the full coverage of the 20% tax credit on fuel, will provide relief to a sector exhausted by the geopolitical crisis and climate emergencies. This is the assessment of Confcooperative Agroalimentare e Pesca (Agri-food and Fishing Cooperative) following today's operational meeting with the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Patrizio La Pietra, and the Director General of Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture, Graziella Romito.
Among the key measures is the European green light to activate €70 million through regional calls for proposals funded by FEAMPA resources, intended to offset general losses related to tensions and conflicts in the Middle East. The measure provides a maximum contribution of up to €80,000 per individual vessel and up to €360,000 for aquaculture facilities. The implementation roadmap will include an initial tranche covering costs incurred by businesses from the end of February to the end of August 2026, with related payments scheduled by the end of the year, followed by a second phase of compensation payments in 2027. At the same time, to address the severe damage caused by natural disasters, such as emergencies related to prolonged summer heatwaves, the National Solidarity Fund has been refinanced. Completing the package is confirmation that the allocated resources have proven sufficient to ensure the use of a tax credit of up to 20% for fuel purchases made between March and May 2026.
"These measures, from the confirmation of the 20% tax credit to the release of FEAMPA funds and the National Solidarity Fund, represent a vital breath of fresh air for a sector overwhelmed on several fronts," says Paolo Tiozzo, Vice President of Confcooperative Agroalimentare e Pesca. "On the one hand, we support businesses in combating fuel costs—an item that accounts for up to 60% of fishing vessel operating costs and has seen increases of up to 42% in ports due to international crises—and on the other, we provide concrete solutions to businesses brought to their knees by temperature anomalies and climate shocks that are threatening fish production along many Italian coasts. The outcome of this roundtable demonstrates the validity of the discussions initiated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry," concludes Tiozzo.
