The over 30 tons will be used for defense against drones
Fiumicino, June 26, 2026 - Over 30 tons of Italian fishermen's nets have been shipped to Ukraine. This morning, the collection operation took place at Fiumicino as part of a solidarity initiative coordinated by the Civil Protection Department of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Federpesca.
A total of over 30 tons of discarded fishing nets, donated by fishing companies in Fiumicino and Civitavecchia, were collected, loaded, and shipped this morning to Ukraine, where they will be used by the population to protect streets and buildings from drone attacks. This simple yet effective system has proven its worth in a variety of situations. Drones attempting to attack public and private buildings are unable to penetrate the meshes of fishing nets, saving the lives and homes of a large portion of the population.
The operation is part of a broader national operation involving several Italian fishing communities, coordinated by Federpesca, including Mazara del Vallo, Fiumicino, and Civitavecchia, within the framework of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, with the operational support of the Port Authorities.
The collection day was attended by Giovanni De Siervo, head of international relations for the Civil Protection Agency, Francesca Biondo, Federpesca Director General, Stefano Costa, Councilor for Environment and Fisheries for the Municipality of Fiumicino, and Gennaro Del Prete, Federpesca representative for the Lazio Region and president of the La Pesca Romana cooperative in Fiumicino.
"We thank the commitment and willingness of the fishermen who have joined this initiative to support the Ukrainian population," said Federpesca Director Francesca Biondo. "By sending nets that would otherwise have been discarded, they have made a concrete contribution to protecting schools, buildings, sensitive sites, and roads. Similar operations are underway in other Italian marinas, and as Federpesca, we are proud to make this contribution. At a time of particular hardship for the fishing industry, Italian fishermen are reaffirming their fundamental role, not only in ensuring quality food, but also in providing a concrete example of solidarity. We hope that this contribution can offer concrete help to the population affected by the conflict and that lasting peace can be achieved as soon as possible."
"We also thank the Port Authority for its essential and valuable collaboration, which has contributed to the operations in all marinas," concluded the director.
Federpesca representative for the Lazio Region, Gennaro Del Prete, stated: "Our fishermen responded promptly to this request, demonstrating a great sense of responsibility and solidarity. We are proud of the willingness shown by our fleets and thank all the fishing companies that participated in the initiative."
