University research to grow Italian fisheries

Legacoop Agroalimentare launches, in collaboration with Randstad Italia, the second edition of the Degree Thesis Award 'Sustainable fishing and aquaculture: from governance to supply chain'

20, Apr 2023

Professionalism and knowledge. These are the two fundamental aspects for any production chain to be competitive on the global market. Even Italian fishing cannot ignore these two elements. From this need and to promote best practices in support of environmental, social and economic development, the second edition of the Graduation Thesis Award "Sustainable fishing and aquaculture: from governance to the supply chain" was born, organized by
Legacoop Agroalimentare and Randstad Italia, an initiative promoted as part of the activities of the three-year fisheries and aquaculture plan for 2023, to ensure that the enhancement of university education in the sector supports the fishing chain.
For Cristian Maretti, president of Legacoop Agroalimentare «the link with the University is important for the world of cooperation. We have seen it with the theses on agri-food that we have recently awarded, it is even more so for fishing. It is essential for a correct valorisation of the supply chain, to give profitability to fishermen and sustainability to consumers».
Sara Guidelli, general manager of Legacoop Agroalimentare, underlines that «linking the world of fishing to university research means giving a future to fishermen and fisherwomen. Fishing and aquaculture are increasingly called upon to contribute to a healthy, safe and accessible diet for the entire population. And it becomes increasingly strategic to combine the multiple production needs with the stresses posed by complex systems and by the current historical moment».
The prize. Legacoop Agroalimentare will reward 2,000 euros for 10 master's degree theses (discussed between 1 October 2021 and 31 July 2023), dedicated to developing and investigating issues related to fishing and aquaculture in terms of sustainability. The theses may have a social-political-economic, technical, scientific and legal nature. The award is established in collaboration with Randstad Italia, a leading international group in the human resources sector, and involves the associated cooperatives in the management and development, with the aim of creating opportunities for employment and professional growth.
The focus of the common strategy is on professionalism and knowledge: for Marco Ceresa, CEO of Randstad Group Italia, attracting and retaining talent calls all companies to implement adequate qualification, retraining, retention and development of operator skills plans, with the objective of creating opportunities for new employment and concrete professional development for people already working in the sector.
