The new regulations concern the purse seine method of catching anchovies and sardines
The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has approved a new management plan for purse seine fisheries in the Iberian Mediterranean, which responds to the need to continue progressing in sustainable fisheries management, within the framework of the objectives of the common fisheries policy.
In the absence of a multiannual Community plan (unlike what happens with demersal fisheries in the western Mediterranean), or an international plan of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (CGPM), it is the responsibility of Spain to establish the necessary measures for the management of the fishery resources exploited by the Spanish purse seine fleet in the Mediterranean.
