Bluefin tuna: more guarantees for EU fishermen

Europarliament approves possibility to extend fishing season in case of bad weather

13, Sep 2023

Possibility of extending the fishing season and increasing the capacity of purse seines: these are some of the measures envisaged by the management plan for bluefin tuna in the eastern Mediterranean and the Atlantic definitively approved by the European Parliament.

Under the new regulation, European Union members with bluefin tuna quotas should establish an annual fishing plan, defining the number of vessels and traps, with purse seine capacity increased by up to 20% compared to 2018 limits. Members are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent distribution of fishing quotas between small-scale and larger fleets.

All EU countries can extend their fishing season by up to ten days if they demonstrate that, due to weather conditions, their fishing vessels were unable to use the scheduled fishing days during the year. Finally, EU countries responsible for farming must prepare annual plans and implement a traceability system, including monitoring caging operations via video cameras in the water.
