Beef cattle breeding
Good news from Sicily: the Region has recognized with a Decree the first Producers' Organization in the beef cattle sector of Sicily, associated with the AOP Italia Zootecnica.
It was a long and participatory journey – said the President of OP Sicilia, Dr. Marco Mocciaro – which began in 2009, with a first meeting in Messina, where the then Comitato Italia Zootecnica presented us with one of the first drafts of the National Beef Plan and we were a Consortium of breeders who managed a Disciplinary of Voluntary Labeling. Since that day, a lot of progress has been made, the Comitato Italia Zootecnica has become AOP Italia Zootecnia, obtaining recognition in 2018 as the only Association of Producers' Organizations in the beef sector in Italy and the Consorzio Carni di Sicilia, in June 2019 changed its company name to “Organizzazione Produttori Bovini da Carne della Sicilia Scarl” starting the journey to obtain recognition as a PO from the Sicilian Region.
Finally, just on the eve of the G7 held in Ortigia (SR), the Decree was delivered to us – continues Mocciaro – and it was with great pleasure that I participated in the conference organized on September 27 at the Residence Alla Giudecca by AOP Italia Zootecnica together with the OP Unicarve and the Consorzio Sigillo Italiano on the theme “The sustainability and quality of the Italian beef cattle breeding system”, being able to officially present our Organization with a report in line with our history with the theme: “The evolution of the Consorzio Carni di Sicilia into OP and Capofiliera SQNZ of the Veal and Scottona raised on cereals”. Now we are ready for new challenges – adds President Mocciaro – and it will be our responsibility to collaborate with the Sicilian Carni Filiera Production District to propose a development project for beef cattle breeding in Sicily, starting from the breeding of suckler cows, to organize the entire supply chain.
