Vegan ‘sausages’ and ‘hamburgers’ can be called by these names, even if there is zero animal substance in their compounds. This was ruled by the European Court of Justice. The judges of the highest EU court stated that where a legally protected name is not already used, EU countries cannot prevent companies that produce plant-based alternatives to meat from calling their creations by the names ‘steak’ or ‘sausage’.
