Some eight years after the first mission to Italy by the US authorities of APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) to examine the control systems adopted against swine vesicular disease (MVS) by the regions of Umbria and Tuscany, the Notice was finally published in the Federal Register today, officially extending the boundaries of the area recognised by APHIS as free from MVS
Vesicular Disease was completely eradicated from the whole of Italy back in 2019, but US regulations require that the recognition of MVS is based on a risk assessment carried out directly by APHIS. At the conclusion of this process, the US authorities declared that the regions of Tuscany and Umbria “are MVS-free and that the surveillance, prevention and control measures implemented by Italy are sufficient to minimise the likelihood of introducing the disease to the US through imports”. The area of the so-called “Northern Macro-Region” is therefore extended: Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta, Liguria, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Marche, Tuscany, Umbria and the two autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano are officially MVS-free for Americans as well.
«The extension of Vesicular Disease-free status to Tuscany and Umbria is extremely strategic for the entire sector because not only does it open the US market to short-cured Italian deli meats processed in these territories, such as Finocchiona IGP or Prosciutto di Norcia IGP, but also because it allows plants located in other areas already recognised as free of Vesicular Disease and having commercial relations with companies located in Tuscany and Umbria to overcome some of the difficulties involved in certification for US export purposes» said ASS.I.CA. director Davide Calderone.
