Pork, EU-China tensions threaten to hit Italian exports

Trade relations between Europe and China are at a high point of tension, and Italian pork producers could pay the price once again

15, Oct 2024

The European Union recently imposed tariffs on Chinese electric cars, accusing Beijing of unfair competition due to state subsidies to its companies. A move that, although aimed at protecting the European automotive industry, risks unleashing a chain reaction with unpredictable effects. The Italian pork sector, already fragile due to a series of internal and global factors, now finds itself having to face yet another obstacle on the Chinese market, one of the most important for our country's exports.

China represents a fundamental outlet for pork made in Italy, which enjoys a reputation for extremely high quality. Exports to the Asian giant have grown in recent years, thanks also to the growing demand for high-end food products by the Chinese middle class. However, the current situation risks overturning this positive trend.
