A way out must be found immediately and allow the survival of farms and the preservation of one of Italy's strategic agri-food sectors
The situation of pig farms in the PSA (African Swine Fever) restriction zones is serious: production is at a standstill, movements are blocked with the consequent risk of overcrowding and,' adds Confagricoltura, ’for the companies that can still market, there is the mockery of the collapse in animal sale prices.
To date there have been 50 outbreaks in Italy (Pavia and Lodi the most affected areas - see table) and about 25,000 positive animals.
The situation is no longer sustainable. Confagricoltura therefore urges the institutions to act firmly to find a way out immediately and allow the survival of farms and the safeguard of one of the strategic sectors of the Italian agri-food industry with a total value of more than 13 billion euro and 2.3 billion in exports.
