FAO: food prices down year-on-year in February 2024

On a monthly basis, sugar, meat and dairy products bucked the trend

09, Mar 2024

The benchmark for world food commodity prices declined for the seventh consecutive month in February, as lower international quotations for all major grains more than offset rising sugar and meat prices. This is according to the monthly report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

The FAO Meat Price Index rose 1.8 percent from January, with poultry meat prices rising the most, followed by beef prices, which were affected by heavy rains that disrupted cattle transport in Australia. Pork prices also rose slightly due to increased demand from China and the tight supply situation in Western Europe. International sheep meat prices declined partly due to record production following flock restocking in Australia.
