AFIDOP announces its presence at SIAL. France confirms itself as the leading market for the export of Italian dairy products and certified cheeses in particular. Out of 136,000 tonnes of Italian dairy products purchased in 2023 by their transalpine cousins, more than 40,000 tonnes are PDO and PGI cheeses, worth around 470 million euros
This was revealed by AFIDOP, the Association of Italian PDO and PGI Cheeses, which from 19 to 23 October will participate in the International Food Exhibition in Paris (SIAL), one of the main European trade fairs for the food sector. Today, every third Italian cheese that ends up on French tables is PDO, and the PDO and PGI sector accounts for almost half (45%) of the value of cheese exports in the Hexagon. With a per capita consumption of around 27 kg per year, it is not surprising that the French are particularly sensitive to the dairy quality of our certified cheeses.
The last 12-18 months confirm this liking: according to AFIDOP elaborations on Istat data, among the most popular PDO cheeses in France are Grana Padano PDO and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO in pieces (10. 700 t), but sales of grated products are also going strong (16,000 t of hard PDO cheeses), Gorgonzola PDO (5,800 t), Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO (over 6,000 t) and pecorino cheeses, such as Pecorino Romano PDO and Pecorino Toscano PDO (1,000 t). 2024 confirmed the positive trend. In the first half of the year, Grana Padano PDO and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO in pieces recorded +3% in volume, Gorgonzola PDO +2% and pecorinos +1%. High service value formats are flying, with a +13% increase in grated cheese.
