Brotherhood of the Museto: 48 porkers for the World Championship

From 12 January to 16 February the suin generis festival on the world of pork kicks off

The sixth edition of the Festa del Museto and the third edition of the world championship that pits the best pork butchers against each other comes to life. Organised by the greedy Confraternita del Museto, a sodality of pork connoisseurs born in Riese Pio X and led by the Gran Norcino, Matteo Guidolin, who is also mayor of the municipality. 

The reigning champion is Luigi Fabian from Salvarosa di Castelfranco Veneto (in the photo), who will have to prove that he is up to the title. There is no shortage of challengers, and there is a new record number of participants in the event: 48 will compete (last year there were 36), coming from five provinces in the Veneto region (Treviso 30, Padua 6, Venice 6, Vicenza 3, Verona 1), as well as two companies from Pordenone. On Monday 15 January, the selection round of the 12 finalists will take place at the historical headquarters of the Confraternity of the Museto, the Caneva dei Biasio. Two are already entitled to advance to the final, through 'wild cards' decided by the Confraternity board. They are Antica Osteria Morelli from Pergine Valsugana representing Trentino Alto Adige and Mario Lizzi from Fagagna representing Friuli Venezia Giulia. 

The final will be hosted by Casa Riese on 17 January, a venue that will host more than 300 people who will delight in a dinner with the best of the best while waiting to know the winner. The jury will include the mayor of Treviso Mario Conte, as well as Cesare De Stefani, Osteria senz’oste, and Paolo Manzan of Nonno Andrea.
